Speaking of SRJO’s performance of the big band music of Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus, here are a couple of backstage peaks. Trombonist David Marriott, Jr. (aka Red Raspus) shares a series of vignettes during the soundcheck prior to the March 7th performance at Kirkland Performance Center, including a quick look a Jim Wilke in the sound booth, preparing to record the concert for a future broadcast on his Jazz NW show on KPLU.
Next Bill Ramsay offers this jazz loving blogger an insight into how he approaches playing the music of Mingus and Monk. Ramsay is SRJO’s much-loved baritone sax master, and has been on of Seattle’s busiest players for decades, having played and toured with Thad Jones & Mel Lewis, Gene Harris, Quincy Jones, Benny Goodman, and the Count Basie Orchestra, and others.
Next time you’re at an SRJO concert, he’d like you to know he’ll be selling 8-track tapes out of the back of his car after the show.
