The east coast meets the west coast in Seattle this weekend, when the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra performs large ensemble arrangements of compositions by jazz giants Thelonious Monk (N.Y.) and Charles Mingus (L.A.).

In another special to the Seattle Times, writer Hugo Kugiya talks with SRJO executive director and co-artistic director Michael Brockman (seen here conducting SRJO) about the diverse styles of Monk and Mingus, and the bands upcoming tribute to their groundbreaking music.
